She turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, nothing seemed wrong. The road was beautiful. Sunlight fell through the branches, and wildflowers grew beside the gravel. With every pleasant mile, she felt more certain she had made the right decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the road narrowed. The gravel gave way to deep ruts. Finally, she rounded a bend and saw the bridge. Part of its wooden surface had collapsed into the creek below. She sat quietly, both hands resting on the steering wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The warning had been true even when the road was beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think about how often we need that reminder. A choice can feel comfortable in the beginning and still carry us somewhere we never intended to go. The consequences may remain hidden long enough for us to mistake an easy beginning for God\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.\u201d \u2014 Proverbs 2:6, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Proverbs 2 invites us to seek wisdom with the determination of someone searching for hidden treasure. There is a willingness involved: receiving God\u2019s words, listening carefully, asking for understanding, and valuing what He says enough to obey it. We do not always recognize danger by its appearance. Sometimes it arrives through flattering words, persuasive reasoning, or something we deeply want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDiscretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee.\u201d \u2014 Proverbs 2:11, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n God\u2019s wisdom reaches into ordinary decisions. What we entertain. Whom we trust. What we excuse. The conversation we keep returning to, even though it is feeding resentment. The opportunity that requires a little dishonesty. The relationship in which we keep silencing our convictions because we are afraid of being alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We may already have enough light to recognize the next faithful step. What we struggle with is accepting what obedience will cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTrust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.\u201d \u2014 Proverbs 3:5\u20136, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The woman had studied her map, but the cottage owner knew the condition of the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our understanding is limited, too. We can examine what is in front of us and still miss what lies around the bend. Trusting God means bringing Him our desires while remaining willing to hear an answer that disappoints us. Sometimes His direction comes through a Scripture we would rather explain away. Sometimes it comes through correction from a faithful friend. Sometimes obedience simply means waiting until we can proceed honestly and with a clear conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Proverbs 3 reminds us not to despise the Lord\u2019s correction. His love includes teaching us where our judgment has failed. We can receive that correction without making excuses and without deciding that our failure has placed us beyond His care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the broken bridge, the woman could have stayed there rehearsing why her decision had seemed reasonable. She could have searched for a dangerous way across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, she turned around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The return journey took time. She passed the same wildflowers and the same stretches of sunlit road, now understanding something she had missed before. Beauty alone could not tell her whether a road was safe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n There is humility in turning around. There is also hope. When God exposes a wrong direction, we can respond while there is still an opportunity to change course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKeep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.\u201d \u2014 Proverbs 4:23, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Guarding our hearts includes noticing the desires that influence our decisions. Have I become so eager for relief that I will accept anything that offers it? Am I seeking God\u2019s direction, or searching for permission to do what I have already chosen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those are uncomfortable questions, but they make room for honest prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.\u201d \u2014 James 1:5, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n We are invited to ask. We do not have to pretend we understand everything or hide the fact that we feel uncertain. As we ask, we return to His Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.\u201d \u2014 Psalm 119:105, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n A lamp gives enough light to take the next step. We may want the whole journey explained before we obey, but much of walking with God happens through daily faithfulness: telling the truth, receiving correction, refusing compromise, and choosing again to trust Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPonder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.\u201d \u2014 Proverbs 4:26, KJV<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time the woman reached the cottage, evening had settled over the mountain. A light glowed beside the door. The longer road had brought her safely home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps today there is a decision that needs another look. A warning we have brushed aside. A conviction we have been trying to quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can pause. We can ask for wisdom. And if we need to turn around, we can begin with the next obedient step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Father, <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Give me a heart that treasures Your wisdom. Help me recognize when my desires are clouding my judgment. Teach me to receive Your correction and to trust You when obedience requires patience. Forgive me for the times I have explained away Your Word to justify my own choices. Give me courage to change direction where I need to, humility to seek wise counsel, and discernment to recognize what is drawing me away from You.
